Nigerian scholar Dr Ademola Adesola has been honoured in Canada for his contribution to strengthening connections between academia and the community.
Based in Canada, Adesola was one of two recipients of Mount Royal University’s 2026 President’s Community Connections Award. The honour recognises individuals whose work has made significant contributions to building relationships between the university and the communities around it.
A major part of Adesola’s recognised work is the African and Black Writings in Canada Speaker Series, an annual initiative he founded and continues to convene. The platform provides an avenue for engagement around African and Black writing in Canada and has become one of the undertakings highlighted in connection with his award.
According to Adesola, the award celebrates people who actively develop collaboration, partnerships and programmes that strengthen Mount Royal University’s role as a positive force within the community.
The recipients embody the values of service, engagement and social responsibility through contributions that extend beyond the university campus and into society.
Reflecting on his own recognition, Adesola specifically pointed to his work with the African and Black Writings in Canada Speaker Series as one of the initiatives represented by the award.
“My initiation and convening of the African and Black Writings in Canada Speaker Series annually stands out as one of the undertakings that The President’s Community Connections Award celebrates,” he said.
The recognition places another spotlight on the contributions of Nigerians building academic and cultural connections internationally, with Adesola’s work demonstrating how university-based initiatives can also create platforms for community engagement.
