For years, Ezekiel Nathaniel has steadily built a reputation as one of Nigeria's most dependable athletes on the global stage and in Glasgow on Friday, the 23-year-old reached another major milestone by winning the men's 400m hurdles title at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding another golden moment to Nigeria's impressive campaign.

Nathaniel's victory also lifted Team Nigeria's gold medal tally to nine, further reflecting the country's growing strength across multiple sports at the Glasgow Games.

The journey to this achievement has been shaped by years of steady progress. A native of Delta State, Nathaniel left Nigeria in 2022 to pursue his athletics career in the United States, where his talent blossomed at Baylor University in Texas. During his freshman season, he broke the Nigerian record in the 400m hurdles, immediately establishing himself as one of the nation's brightest track prospects.

His upward trajectory continued in 2025 when he became Baylor University's first-ever national champion in the event after winning the NCAA Outdoor Championship with a personal best of 47.49 seconds. The outstanding season also earned him the Men's Track Athlete of the Year award. Nathaniel currently holds the Nigerian record of 47.86 seconds and has consistently competed among the world's elite, reaching the semi-finals at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships as well as the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Those accomplishments made him one of the favourites heading into Glasgow, and he lived up to that billing from the opening round. He won Heat Two in 48.69 seconds to qualify as the fastest athlete for the final. England's Jake Minshull advanced with 48.88 seconds, while India's Santhosh Tamilarasan secured his place after clocking 49.51 seconds.

In the final, Nathaniel once again rose to the occasion. Pulling away from the field over the closing stages, he crossed the finish line in 48.47 seconds to secure the Commonwealth title in convincing fashion. Minshull claimed the silver medal after finishing in 48.99 seconds, while Jamaica's Assinie Wilson completed the podium with the bronze medal in 49.22 seconds.

Every major title has a story behind it, and Nathaniel's was written long before the starting gun in Glasgow. Years of disciplined work, international experience and unwavering belief converged in one unforgettable race, delivering a gold medal that will occupy a proud place in Nigeria's athletics history.
