Nigeria's investment in developing skilled professionals continues to yield results, with four beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) graduating with distinctions as part of a new cohort of scholars who have successfully completed postgraduate studies under the programme's overseas scholarship scheme.
A total of 16 PAP-sponsored students earned master's degrees in strategic fields, including software engineering, oil and gas, data science and engineering, financial management, law, construction engineering management and global public health.
The four distinction recipients are Nina Orubebe in Financial Management, Tonbra Tonlagha in International Hospitality and Tourism, Kemien Egbekun in Law, and Simon Douye in Construction Engineering Management.
The scholars studied at institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States, including Carnegie Mellon University, Coventry University, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Dundee, Anglia Ruskin University, the University of Bedfordshire, Aston University, the University of Cambridge, the University of South Wales and Northumbria University.
The latest achievement adds to the programme's growing impact. Since Dr Dennis Brutu Otuaro assumed office as Administrator in March 2024, PAP says it has produced 111 master's and doctoral degree holders, comprising 57 graduates from foreign universities and 54 from Nigerian institutions. During the same period, about 9,000 undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships have been awarded in Nigerian tertiary institutions, while 247 beneficiaries have received scholarships for higher-degree studies overseas.
Congratulating the graduates, Otuaro said their success demonstrates that sustained investment in education is producing professionals equipped to contribute to the development of the Niger Delta and Nigeria. He noted that the scholars completed their programmes on schedule and said their achievements further strengthen the region's human capital base.
He urged the beneficiaries to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired to advance their communities and support national development.
Responding to criticism over the expansion of the scholarship initiative, Otuaro said the programme would remain committed to its mandate.
Established in 2009 following the Federal Government's amnesty initiative for repentant Niger Delta militants, the Presidential Amnesty Programme has grown beyond disarmament and reintegration to focus on education, vocational training and skills acquisition, helping to equip thousands of young Nigerians with the expertise needed to drive development, expand opportunities and promote lasting peace in the oil-producing region.
