AKK Gas Pipeline Set to Accelerate Niger State's Rise as a Manufacturing and Investment Hub

Major infrastructure projects often redefine the economic future of entire regions and for Niger State, the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline is shaping up to be one of those landmark developments, with the potential to attract major investments, expand manufacturing and unlock new drivers of economic growth.

Central to that vision is a plan to develop the approximately 1,000 square kilometre AKK corridor within the state into a dedicated Industrial Development Park, creating a location where dependable energy supply and abundant natural resources can support large-scale enterprise.

Speaking at the 2026 AKK and Energy Business Development Forum in Minna, Governor Mohammed Bago said the project would serve as a catalyst for gas-powered economic growth while opening Niger State's vast economic potential to investors. He explained that the initiative is expected to create jobs, stimulate business activity and encourage the establishment of agro-allied industries, petrochemical plants, fertiliser companies and a broad range of manufacturing enterprises.

According to the governor, the development marks the beginning of a new chapter not only for Niger State but also for Nigeria and the wider region. He expressed confidence that the transformation of the AKK corridor would influence economic development far beyond Northern Nigeria, generating fresh prospects across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Bago also highlighted the state's strong energy advantage, noting that Niger State combines abundant hydropower resources, extensive solar energy potential and access to natural gas. He said this unique mix places the state in a strategic position to attract businesses seeking reliable and diversified energy sources.

"My administration is determined to maximise these opportunities to transform the state's economy and make it one of Nigeria's leading productive economies," the governor said, adding that the combination of hydropower, solar energy and natural gas provides a solid foundation for sustained economic expansion.

The Executive Vice President, Gas, Power and New Energy Directorate of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), Olufemi Olalekan, disclosed that the AKK Gas Pipeline has already reached Abuja and is scheduled for commissioning in September 2026.

He further revealed that the pipeline infrastructure has been completed up to Kano and is being commissioned in phases, while work on the Niger State section is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

As completion draws closer, the AKK Gas Pipeline is expected to strengthen Nigeria's energy infrastructure while providing manufacturers with greater access to natural gas. For Niger State, it represents an opportunity to translate its energy resources into productive industries, attract long-term capital and reinforce its growing role in Nigeria's industrial transformation.
