Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has commissioned the 6.475-kilometre Amanyam–Mbiaso road in Ikot Ekpene as part of activities marking the state’s 39th anniversary.
The project is the third of 39 projects scheduled for commissioning across Akwa Ibom’s 31 local government areas through the end of September, reflecting the state government’s focus on using the anniversary celebrations to showcase ongoing infrastructure and development initiatives.
The newly completed single-carriageway road is eight metres wide and features 12.95 kilometres of side drains. It traverses Ifuho, Ibong, Ikot Udoe and Mbiaso communities, providing improved access to areas that community leaders said had endured difficult road conditions for decades.
Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Eno said his administration was more interested in delivering projects that improve the lives of residents than engaging in unnecessary political activities.
“Whatever developmental efforts that we are putting in place are tailored towards the overall benefit and improved living conditions of our people. We don’t play politics with the welfare of our citizenry,” he said.
The governor commended the people of Ikot Ekpene for their continued support and assured them that uncompleted projects inherited from previous administrations would be reviewed and completed for the benefit of residents.
He also promised further development projects in the area, including the Ikot Ekpene International Market, Compassionate Homes, Primary Health Centres and additional road projects.
Eno praised the Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Hon. Aniefiok Nkom, for his efforts to execute projects targeted at the needs of residents. He said similar development initiatives by local government chairmen across the state were encouraging and reflected the importance of local government autonomy.
Providing details of the completed road, the Commissioner for Works, Prof. Eno Ibanga, said the 6.475-kilometre project had been diligently supervised to ensure standard, quality and durability.
Ibanga described the road as a complete developmental ecosystem that had opened up Amanyam and adjoining communities. He also disclosed that Governor Eno’s approval of a variation in the project cost helped facilitate its timely completion.
Nkom, in his remarks, praised the governor for what he described as significant development strides in Ikot Ekpene, particularly the ongoing International Market, hospital project, access roads and the Amanyam–Mbiaso road.
“You have done so much in, and for Ikot Ekpene. Currently, you have four projects to commission in Ikot Ekpene. I want to tell you that we are very happy with you,” Nkom said.
He said residents of Amanyam and the wider Ikot Ekpene community had declared their support for the governor, adding that his administration had fulfilled its promises to the people.
