Tafawa Balewa Square became the centre of one of Nollywood’s biggest public gatherings on Saturday night as more than 51,000 people assembled in Lagos for a single screening of Black Market.
What began as an attempt to bring 50,000 people together to watch a Nigerian film ended with the audience exceeding that target and earning a place in Guinness World Records history for the largest audience gathering ever for a movie screening.
A Guinness World Records official confirmed the achievement at the event after attendance figures crossed the 51,000 mark. FilmOne, which distributed the film, later announced the record on its social media platforms.
“51,000+ people. One screen. One moment that just made history,” FilmOne said.
The distributor described the achievement as the “WORLD RECORD for the Largest Audience Gathering Ever for a Movie Screening,” adding: “Nigeria, we didn’t just watch a movie. WE MADE HISTORY.”
Long before the film began, movie lovers had started arriving at TBS, with queues stretching towards the TBS roundabout as hundreds made their way into the venue.
The gates opened at 2pm, followed by a red-carpet session at about 3pm. The main screening was scheduled for 7pm and was expected to run until 8:30pm.
Music, food and games formed part of the programme, while celebrities and other personalities also attended. Gabriel Afolayan, Real Warri Pikin and Tomi Ojo were among those spotted at the venue. Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, arrived at about 8:50pm.
At the centre of the gathering was Black Market, a crime thriller built around survival, economic pressure and crime.
The film follows five market women caught up in a cross-border smuggling operation amid fuel scarcity and economic hardship. Their situation takes a darker turn when the daughter of one of the women is kidnapped, throwing their lives into turmoil.
Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and produced by Nora Awolowo, Black Market was produced by Rixel Studios, Signet Ring Studios and FilmOne Studios, with FilmOne serving as distributor.
The cast includes Uzor Arukwe, Susan Pwajok, Lateef Adedimeji, Scarlet Gomez, Ibrahim Yekini, popularly known as Itele D Icon, Omowunmi Dada, Teniola Aladese and Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, among others.
The screening was organised around a Guinness World Records attempt, with organisers initially targeting 50,000 people at a single location. The event combined the film screening with entertainment and activities designed to draw a large audience to TBS.
The record attempt was supported by the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, alongside several corporate partners.
With attendance surpassing 51,000, the Black Market screening has become a significant moment for Nollywood, bringing a massive audience together around a Nigerian film and securing Guinness World Records recognition for the largest audience gathering ever for a movie screening.
