Nigerian business executive Onoja Atta Onoja has received a congressional proclamation from the United States Congress in recognition of his contributions to strengthening trade, investment and private-sector cooperation between Africa, the Caribbean and the United States.
The honour was presented by Hakeem Jeffries, a leader in the US Congress, during the Guyana Independence Celebration Committee of New York's commemoration of Guyana's 60th Independence Anniversary. The event brought together diplomats, business leaders, policymakers and members of the African and Caribbean diaspora committed to expanding economic collaboration across the regions.
The proclamation recognised Onoja's more than two decades of leadership in the shipping, distribution, marketing and energy sectors, as well as his contributions to international business development, service on corporate boards and efforts to deepen commercial engagement between emerging economies and the United States.
As President of the African Caribbean Chamber of Trade, Commerce and Industry (ACCTCI), Onoja has championed trade, investment and institutional partnerships connecting Africa, the Caribbean and North America, creating stronger pathways for businesses to collaborate across borders.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Onoja said the recognition reinforced the need to build practical partnerships that deliver shared economic growth.
"This recognition reinforces the importance of creating practical opportunities for businesses to trade, invest and innovate together," he said.
"Our shared history must now evolve into shared economic prosperity."
The recognition comes as Nigeria seeks to maximise opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) while expanding commercial relationships with emerging global markets.
Industry stakeholders say the congressional proclamation reflects the growing international standing of Nigerian business leaders who are advancing global commerce through institution-building, strategic partnerships and economic diplomacy. It also reinforces Nigeria's expanding role in shaping cross-border trade and investment across Africa and beyond.
