The inaugural season of MasterChef Nigeria has done more than introduce a globally celebrated cooking competition to the country. It has also created a landmark moment for Nigeria's culinary industry, establishing a national platform where technical excellence, creativity and storytelling through food take centre stage.
Among the contestants who embraced that challenge, 26-year-old Favour Bessan, popularly known as Favy, distinguished herself with consistent performances that combined innovation, composure and refined culinary skill. Week after week, she navigated increasingly demanding tasks, emerging as one of the competition's strongest contenders.
A turning point in her campaign came when she became the first contestant to win the MasterChef Nigeria Immunity Pin. Awarded to the winner of a high-pressure challenge, the pin protects its holder from future elimination, making it one of the competition's most valuable strategic advantages. The achievement not only secured her place in the competition at a crucial stage but also underlined her ability to excel when the stakes were highest, helping propel her to the semi-finals.
As the competition drew to a close, only Favy and fellow finalist Fads remained in contention for the inaugural title. Their final assignment required them to prepare a three-course menu that expressed their individual culinary identity, giving both contestants the opportunity to showcase their technique, creativity, presentation and storytelling.
Favy's menu earned the admiration of judges Chef Stone and Chef Eros, who commended her creativity, technical execution, presentation and the narrative behind her dishes. Her starter of smoked salmon served with potato mash and roasted bell pepper soup laid the foundation for a performance that ultimately set her apart.
When the final decision was announced, Favy was crowned the first-ever MasterChef Nigeria champion. Her victory earned her the coveted trophy and a grand prize worth ₦73 million, one of the largest prize packages ever awarded in a Nigerian reality television competition.
MasterChef Nigeria premiered earlier this year as the country's first adaptation of the internationally acclaimed cooking competition. With its successful debut, the franchise has opened a new chapter for competitive culinary arts in Nigeria, and Favour Bessan's name will forever be remembered as the first champion to lift the MasterChef Nigeria trophy.
