Nigeria's rise in global sprinting moved to a new level on Saturday as Kayinsola Ajayi defeated reigning 100-metre world champion Oblique Seville to win the men's 100m at the London Diamond League.
The victory further cements the 21-year-old's status among the world's elite sprinters and strengthens Nigeria's hopes of returning to the podium in the men's sprint events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Nigeria did not win an individual medal in the discipline at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, but Ajayi's recent performances have changed expectations.
Ajayi stopped the clock at 9.84 seconds, equalling the Nigerian national record for the third time in two months. The triumph also marked his second consecutive Diamond League 100m title and his second victory over Seville in as many weeks.
The race was fiercely contested through the opening 50 metres, with Ajayi and the Jamaican locked together before the Nigerian unleashed a powerful finish to pull clear in the closing metres and seal another memorable victory.
Seville finished second in 9.87 seconds, while Great Britain's Romell Glave claimed third with a personal-best 9.97 seconds. Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme also ran 9.97 seconds but narrowly missed the podium in fourth place.
The strength of the field underscored the significance of Ajayi's performance. South Africa's Gift Leotlela and American Jordan Anthony both dipped below the 10-second mark, finishing fifth and sixth respectively in 9.99 seconds. Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes placed seventh in 10.02 seconds, followed by Jeremiah Azu in eighth with 10.07 seconds.
Ajayi's outstanding season began before the Diamond League. He is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) champion in both the men's 60m indoor and 100m outdoor events.
His wind-assisted 9.72-second run to claim the NCAA outdoor title placed him joint sixth alongside Jamaican legend Asafa Powell on the all-conditions list of the world's fastest 100m sprinters. Only Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay, Yohan Blake, Obadele Thompson and Andre De Grasse have recorded faster times.
With another Diamond League victory, another win over the reigning world champion and a national record-equalling performance, Ajayi continues to showcase Nigeria's growing strength in world athletics as anticipation builds for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
