A proposed $145 million solar manufacturing facility is set to strengthen Abia State's position in Nigeria's expanding renewable energy industry, with expectations that the investment will stimulate industrial production, create employment opportunities, and enhance local manufacturing capacity.
The planned factory, to be located at Umuelele in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, will be developed by MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited in partnership with Chinese technical experts. The facility is expected to manufacture solar panels and other renewable energy components for the growing clean energy market.
Beyond increasing domestic solar equipment production, the project is expected to generate skilled and unskilled jobs, support youth training programmes, and contribute generally to the economic development within the state.
Providing an update on the initiative, the company's representatives disclosed that preparations have reached an advanced stage, with the first tranche of project financing scheduled for release in September 2026. Members of the Chinese technical team have also visited the proposed site as part of ongoing assessments ahead of construction.
The company explained that the project will be delivered through a Public-Private Partnership arrangement involving the Abia State Government. According to its leadership, the factory is expected to become an important driver of renewable energy manufacturing while helping to build local technical expertise in the clean energy sector.
During a meeting with the investors in Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed his administration's commitment to attracting productive investments by maintaining a business-friendly environment. He noted that the state had already facilitated access to the land required for the project and pledged continued support to ensure its successful implementation.
The governor said the importance of the investment extends beyond its monetary value, noting that the project has the potential to expand industrial activity, create sustainable jobs, boost economic output, and improve living standards across the state. He added that his administration remains committed to supporting investors whose projects align with Abia's long-term economic development objectives.
If completed as planned, the solar manufacturing plant is expected to become a major addition to Nigeria's renewable energy manufacturing industry while reinforcing Abia State's drive to expand its industrial base and promote sustainable economic growth.
