Every great sporting breakthrough has a moment when years of effort finally come together and for Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, that moment arrived on Thursday evening at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, where one throw changed the history of Nigerian athletics.
With a distance of 21.07 metres on his penultimate attempt, the 33-year-old claimed the men's shot put title to become the first Nigerian ever to win Commonwealth Games gold in the event.
The triumph closed a chapter that had stretched across three Commonwealth Games appearances. Enekwechi had settled for silver in 2018, endured the frustration of a fourth-place finish at the Birmingham 2022 Games, and returned to Glasgow determined to finish what he had started. This time, he left with the one medal that had eluded him.
The final unfolded as a contest between experience and nerve. Defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand seized the early advantage with an opening throw of 21.03 metres and appeared well positioned to retain his title. Enekwechi, however, had other plans. His fifth-round effort of 21.07 metres moved him ahead, and no athlete could produce a better throw before the competition came to a close. England's Scott Lincoln completed the podium with a best mark of 20.99 metres.
The result reflected the form Enekwechi had shown throughout the competition. During Wednesday's qualification, he needed only a single throw of 20.03 metres to secure automatic passage into the final, finishing first in Group B ahead of India's Samardeep Singh Gill, New Zealand's Nick Palmer and South Africa's Aiden Smith. Walsh topped Group A with 21.03 metres, setting up the duel that eventually decided the gold medal.
For more than a decade, Enekwechi has remained one of Nigeria's most dependable field athletes. The African record holder has collected five African titles while consistently competing among the world's best shot putters and his latest victory now adds a historic Commonwealth Games gold medal to an already distinguished career.
Enekwechi's landmark victory also strengthened Nigeria's impressive campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The country's medal tally now stands at 15 medals, made up of eight gold, five silver and two bronze, as Nigerian athletes continue to produce performances that reflect the country's growing strength across international sport.
