Nigerian Air Force Officer Wins International Research Award in Pakistan

A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) officer, Group Captain Usman Umar Akeel, has won the Best Individual Research Paper Award at the National Security and War Course (NSWC) of the National Defence University in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The award recognises outstanding academic performance, originality, analytical rigour and policy relevance among participants in the senior-level strategic studies programme.

Akeel received the honour for his paper, "Drone Swarms and the Future of Aerial Warfare: Tactical Innovation or Battlefield Risk?" The research examined the expanding role of drone swarm technology in modern warfare, assessing its operational advantages alongside the strategic and security challenges associated with its use.

The recognition reflects the growing participation of Nigerian military officers in international professional military education and defence research. It also underscores the Nigerian Air Force's emphasis on developing strategic leadership through advanced training, education and research.

According to the Nigerian Air Force, the achievement aligns with the vision of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, to build a highly professional, motivated and mission-ready force capable of responding to evolving security challenges.

The award adds to Nigeria's presence in international defence and military academic circles, highlighting the contributions of Nigerian officers to discussions on emerging technologies and the future of aerial warfare.
