Nigerian Veterinary Surgeon Creates Africa's First Certified Solar Umbrella

 
Nigeria has recorded another milestone in home-grown innovation as Dr. Olu Emmanuel, a veterinary surgeon, earned official recognition for developing what is now regarded as Nigeria's first certified solar-powered umbrella, a breakthrough that also makes it the first officially licensed innovation of its kind in Africa.

Dr. Emmanuel shared the story behind the invention during a testimony at the headquarters of Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners' Chapel) in Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State, where he recounted the journey from concept to national certification.

Although trained and practicing as a veterinary surgeon, Dr. Emmanuel's passion gradually expanded beyond animal healthcare into renewable energy and motivated by a desire to create practical solutions through clean energy, he pursued formal training in solar technology and became a fully certified solar renewable energy professional about ten years ago. Since then, he has dedicated himself to designing innovative products that combine sustainability with everyday functionality.

The result is a solar-powered umbrella that transforms a familiar outdoor accessory into a reliable source of clean energy and lighting. A solar panel mounted at the top of the umbrella captures sunlight throughout the day and converts it into electrical energy. The electricity is stored in an integrated rechargeable battery, making power available even after sunset.

The umbrella also features a built-in light sensor, commonly known as a photoeye, which automatically detects when daylight fades and switches on the lighting system. It can also be operated manually whenever required. Energy-efficient LED lights installed beneath the umbrella ribs provide bright, low-voltage illumination, making the umbrella suitable for outdoor relaxation areas, restaurants, gardens, resorts, recreational spaces, and other locations where dependable lighting is needed without relying on the national electricity grid.

To safeguard the innovation, Dr. Emmanuel secured intellectual property protection by registering the invention with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in Abuja, where it received official certification.

His pursuit of regulatory approval required remarkable patience and determination. In 2023, he submitted the product to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for evaluation. Following a comprehensive assessment process that spanned several years, the invention received full certification from SON this month, confirming that it meets the country's established quality and safety standards.

The certification represents a landmark achievement for both the inventor and the country, establishing Dr. Olu Emmanuel as the innovator behind Nigeria's first certified solar-powered umbrella and the first officially licensed solar umbrella innovation in Africa.
