Nigeria has further strengthened its standing in Africa's strategic communication community with the re-election of Dr. Omoniyi P. Ibietan as Secretary General of the African Public Relations Association (APRA), a renewed vote of confidence in one of the country's most accomplished communication professionals.
The election took place at the APRA General Assembly in Swakopmund, Namibia, where Mr. Arik Karani of Kenya emerged as President while Professor Michele Mekeme of Cameroon was elected Vice President.
Ibietan brings decades of experience to the continental role. As Head of Media Relations at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), he leads key aspects of the Commission's corporate communication strategy. His career has spanned journalism, public service, academia and communication management, including service as Special Media Adviser to the Federal Minister of Information and Communication, where he helped drive the adoption of new media in government communication. A Fellow of both the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and APRA, he holds a doctorate in Communication from North-West University, South Africa, and is the author of Social Media, Social Demography, and Voting Behaviour in Nigeria, published in 2023.
Congratulating him on his re-election, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris described the outcome as a fitting recognition of Ibietan's professionalism, dedication and enduring contributions to the growth of public relations across Africa.
The Minister said the renewed mandate reflects the confidence of communication professionals across the continent in Ibietan's leadership and expressed optimism that he would continue to strengthen collaboration within the profession while advancing Africa's digital transformation agenda.
He also praised APRA for its steadfast commitment to ethical communication and professional excellence, expressing confidence that Nigeria's hosting of the 37th APRA Annual Conference and the World Public Relations Forum in Abuja later this year will further consolidate the country's position as a leading voice in strategic communication on the continent.
