Nigerian Programmer Wins Silver at International High-Tech Championship in Russia

Olaniran Taiwo Sikiru has secured second place at the 2026 High-Tech Championship Final in Veliky Novgorod, Russia, giving Nigeria a strong result at its first appearance in the international competition. The Nigerian software programmer earned silver in the specialised Quality Control Specialist for Transport Logistics Processes category, competing against professionals at an event dedicated to advanced technical and industry skills.

Sikiru’s achievement brings attention to a field where technology and operational expertise intersect. His competition category focuses on applying professional and technological methods to maintain quality and efficiency across transport and logistics operations. These processes are essential to the effective management of modern transportation systems, where performance standards and operational reliability matter.

With a professional background in software programming, Sikiru brought his technical experience into a discipline extending beyond conventional software development. His second-place finish placed him among the leading performers in his category and gave Nigeria a notable result on its introduction to the championship.

The competition ran from September 14 to 18, 2026, attracting more than 15,000 participants from 30 foreign countries, alongside representatives from all 89 regions of the Russian Federation. Its programme covered 20 high-tech competencies, bringing together participants across a range of specialised professional and technological disciplines.

Sikiru was accompanied by Ojetimi Abdulfatai, a fellow Nigerian who served as his mentor, expert and technical specialist throughout the event. While Sikiru competed as Nigeria’s official representative, Abdulfatai provided technical support, making their participation a joint effort to present Nigerian expertise on an international platform.

Their appearance marked the first time Nigeria had sent a delegation to compete at the High-Tech Championship Final. Sikiru’s silver-medal result gave that debut a competitive distinction, establishing an initial Nigerian presence at an event that draws participants from across national boundaries and professional fields.

The result also highlights the breadth of international competitions available to Nigerian professionals beyond more familiar technology disciplines. Sikiru competed in a specialised area connecting technical knowledge with transport logistics and quality management, demonstrating how professional expertise can be applied across different sectors.

Nigeria’s debut in Veliky Novgorod has now produced a concrete result and an entry point for future participation. With Sikiru finishing second in his discipline, the country has established its presence at the championship and recorded an achievement that could encourage more Nigerian professionals to pursue opportunities in international high-tech skills competitions.
