Nigeria Wins UN Human Rights Council Seat with 172 Votes

Nigeria has secured a place on the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term, receiving 172 votes in an election conducted by the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Nigeria was elected alongside 14 other countries to serve a three-year term beginning January 1, 2027, and ending December 31, 2029.

The election saw Nigeria receive 172 of the 181 votes, reflecting the support it secured from UN member states. The outcome gives the country a seat on the 47-member council, which is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide and strengthening international cooperation on related issues.

Reacting to the development, the Federal Government thanked the member states that supported Nigeria’s candidature and reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect in advancing the council’s mandate.

The government also expressed its readiness to work with other council members on initiatives that uphold human dignity, justice and fundamental freedoms. Nigeria’s three-year membership will provide an opportunity to participate directly in international deliberations on human rights and contribute to collective efforts aimed at protecting fundamental rights.

Nigeria’s tenure begins in January 2027 and will run through December 2029, placing the country among the nations responsible for advancing the council’s work during that period.
