Public leadership and humanitarian service featured among the contributions recognised at the 2026 Democracy Heroes Award Africa, which brought together political officeholders and other Nigerians at a ceremony in Abuja on Saturday.
Governors Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Umar Bago of Niger and Agbu Kefas of Taraba were among the recipients at the 15th edition of the awards, organised by Face of Democracy Nigeria Projects (FDN Projects). Ginika Florence Tor, a former federal commissioner representing Enugu State at the Federal Character Commission (FCC), was also honoured for her humanitarian activities and contributions to society.
The ceremony was held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel under the theme “Elevate”. It attracted political leaders, business executives, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, entertainers, civil society representatives and other stakeholders.
Lawal used the occasion to dedicate his award to Nigerians, drawing attention to the importance of peace, security and collective responsibility in building a safer and more prosperous country. He said the recognition was not simply a personal achievement but an incentive to maintain his commitment to good governance, people-oriented policies and initiatives intended to improve citizens’ lives.
Tor, whose recognition centred on her humanitarian work, told journalists after receiving the award that such honours underscored the importance of initiatives designed to improve the welfare of vulnerable people and communities.
The awards extend beyond government and humanitarian activities as the Democracy Heroes Award Africa also recognises entrepreneurs, business executives and entertainers whose work contributes to job creation, youth empowerment, economic growth and poverty reduction. Its stated mission includes celebrating contributions to democratic development, good governance and wider societal advancement.
Olufunsho Ajagbonna, project director of FDN Projects, congratulated the recipients and said the organisation would continue to identify and celebrate individuals whose dedicated service has made meaningful contributions to society.
The 2026 edition marked the 15th year of the awards, bringing together people from public office, business, entertainment and civil society under a platform intended to recognise contributions to governance and citizens’ welfare.
