Kano Tailor Targets Guinness World Record With 120-Hour Sewing Marathon

Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, a Kano-based tailor and entrepreneur, has embarked on a 120-hour sewing marathon aimed at setting a Guinness World Record while producing school uniforms for disadvantaged pupils in public schools.

The five-day challenge, tagged Sew for the Nation, began on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the sports complex of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano. Basari, Chief Executive Officer of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited, is scheduled to conclude the exercise on Monday night, October 12.

Basari announced the initiative in a video shared across his social media platforms on October 1, presenting it as an opportunity to combine his professional craft with support for children who may struggle to afford school uniforms.

“Because I’ll be sewing school uniforms to support the less privileged pupils at the public schools,” he said.

The target is to surpass the existing record of 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, reportedly achieved by fellow Nigerian tailor Oluwaseun Kuforiji in January 2025. Basari's proposed 120-hour run would extend that benchmark by 13 hours, four minutes and 40 seconds.

Introducing the project, Basari said: “My name is Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, I’m the CEO of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited. I am here to announce Sew for the Nation, a Guinness World Record attempt.”

He has also described the exercise as a statement about the possibilities of craftsmanship and ambition among young Nigerians.

“This is more than a record, this is for every dreamer, every artisan and every young Nigerian with a vision,” he said, inviting the public to support the initiative.

Basari's achievement will depend on more than completing the marathon. Guinness World Records must assess the attempt against its evidence and verification requirements before any new record can be officially recognised.

Beyond the record books, the project places a practical cause alongside Basari's ambition: using his tailoring skills to provide school uniforms for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.
