Borno Opens 400-Bed Teaching Hospital, Commissions Mega School in Maiduguri

Borno State has expanded its healthcare and education infrastructure with the opening of a 400-bed teaching hospital at Kashim Ibrahim University and the commissioning of Yerwa Practice Mega School in Maiduguri.

Governor Babagana Zulum inaugurated the two projects on Friday, October 23, 2026, adding new facilities to the state’s efforts to strengthen essential public services after more than a decade of insurgency.

The Kashim Ibrahim University Teaching Hospital is equipped with 13 specialist departments and an array of diagnostic machines intended to support medical treatment and the training of healthcare professionals. Its equipment includes a digital mammography machine, a fluoroscopy system, three 4D ultrasound machines, two mobile X-ray machines, a 160-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner, three conventional X-ray machines and a 1.5-tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner.

The hospital’s specialist services cover paediatrics, physiotherapy, emergency care, internal medicine, surgery, diagnostics and medicine, among other areas. These facilities are expected to broaden access to specialised medical services within Borno while providing opportunities to develop the expertise of future healthcare professionals.

Governor Zulum said his administration had deliberately prioritised investment in healthcare infrastructure to improve access to medical services across the state. He pledged continued government support for the hospital through the provision of equipment, recruitment of qualified health professionals and the maintenance of an enabling environment for effective service delivery.

He also charged the hospital’s management with maintaining discipline, efficiency and professionalism to ensure the institution operates to a high standard.

The second project inaugurated was Yerwa Practice Mega School, which provides primary, junior secondary and senior secondary education in the state capital.

Its commissioning alongside the teaching hospital highlights the state government’s investment in two essential areas of public service.

In attendance was Vice-President Kashim Shettima who commended the Borno State Government for completing the projects, describing them as evidence of the state’s recovery after more than a decade of insurgency. He said the teaching hospital would bring specialised medical care closer to families dealing with illness and provide opportunities for professional learning that could strengthen healthcare for generations.

The long-term impact of the projects will depend on sustained funding, adequate staffing, equipment maintenance and effective management. With the new teaching hospital and mega school, Borno has added capacity to its healthcare and education systems as it continues to rebuild essential services and improve opportunities for its residents.
