Arokodare’s Goals Earn Double Spot on Ajax’s October Shortlist

Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare is making his mark at Ajax, with two of his October goals earning nominations for the club’s Goal of the Month award following an impressive run of four goals in six matches.

The 25-year-old Super Eagles forward has contributed to Ajax’s recent resurgence under coach Michel Sanchez. The Dutch side recorded a fourth consecutive victory with their 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar on Saturday, moving to within one point of Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord.

Arokodare’s nominations reflect his ability to deliver in different attacking situations, from a composed finish in European competition to a commanding header in the domestic league.

His first shortlisted goal came against Atalanta in the UEFA Conference League on October 22. Three minutes before the end of regulation time, he controlled a long pass from Youri Baas, evaded a defender and calmly beat the goalkeeper to put Ajax ahead.

The second nomination followed his decisive contribution against AZ Alkmaar. In the ninth minute, Arokodare rose above defender Mees de Wit to connect with Abdellah Ouazane’s cross, powering his header into the net to secure the victory.

Arokodare faces stiff competition for the award. Ouazane also received two nominations, while Davy Klaassen, Leo Salazar, Abdoulaye Camara and Naoufal Mouslim complete the shortlist.

Beyond his goals, he has highlighted the tactical discipline required to sustain Ajax’s winning run. Speaking after the AZ encounter, he stressed the importance of knowing when to press and when to maintain position, particularly when the team is not dominating possession.

“Sometimes you have to understand when to press. Sometimes you have to know that you are not dominating the match, and then you need to be in position,” he said.

Arokodare joined Ajax in July on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with an option for the Dutch club to make the transfer permanent.

His double nomination adds another milestone to his growing influence in Amsterdam, as Ajax continue their push towards the top of the Eredivisie.
