Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history, defeating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to reach the final for the first time in the nation’s history.
The Nigerian youngsters produced an impressive second-half display at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, to secure a landmark victory and move within one match of claiming their maiden world title.
After a goalless first half, the Flamingos returned with renewed purpose and broke the deadlock in the 56th minute through Queen Joseph, who fired home after receiving an assist from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi.
Nigeria continued to dictate the tempo, with Awawu Bashiru doubling the advantage in the 71st minute before completing her brace nine minutes later. Her second goal, assisted by Oluebube Umejiaku, further strengthened Nigeria’s grip on the encounter.
Brazil pulled one back in the 89th minute through Greise Kelly, but the late goal proved insufficient to derail the Flamingos, who held firm to secure a deserved 3-1 victory.
The triumph marks a defining moment in Nigerian women’s football, with the Flamingos becoming the first African nation to reach the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria had previously reached the semi-finals in 2022 in India, where the team finished with a bronze medal. This year’s campaign has further demonstrated the potential of the country’s young football talents, with the Flamingos overcoming Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals through an 89th-minute penalty converted by captain Azeezat Oduntan.
Head coach Akeem Busari and his technical crew have earned considerable credit for guiding the team to this historic achievement. The players’ discipline, resilience and attacking quality were evident against Brazil, as they rose to the occasion on one of the competition’s biggest stages.
The Flamingos will now face Japan in Saturday’s final, scheduled for November 7, 2026, in Rabat. The Asian side booked its place in the championship match after defeating North Korea 4-1 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw at full time.
With the ultimate prize now within reach, Nigeria’s young stars have an opportunity to achieve an unprecedented feat by becoming the first Nigerian team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Their remarkable victory over Brazil is a testament to the talent, ambition and growing competitiveness of Nigerian women’s football. The Flamingos have already secured their place in history; one final challenge remains as they pursue a memorable triumph on the global stage.
