Meet Joseph Oparamanuike, Founder of Nigeria's First Opera Company




Among-st Classical Music lovers in Nigeria, Joseph Oparamanuike is no stranger. He virtually performs at almost every major classical event in Nigeria especially in Lagos.  

Jo, as he is fondly called,  is a trained Chemical Engineer turned Opera Singer. He is a graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria. 


His love for Classical Music pushed him to seek more knowledge and in 2008 and 2009 he made the best result in West Africa  when he wrote the Grade 8 theory of music exam and Diploma in Singing exam of the Associate Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) . He is the first Nigerian to sit for the ABRSM Diploma in Vocal Teaching and Licentiate in Singing in West Africa.

Due to his unending quest for Classical Music knowledge, Joseph secured  a scholarship from the RCS Trust Fund in Scotland and he studied Master of Music Opera (MMus Opera) at the Alexander Gibson Opera School (AGOS), Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), under the tutelage of Scott Johnson.

Furthermore, he holds  a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) in Singing and Diploma of Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (DipABRSM) in Vocal Teaching.


Joseph sang the concert version of Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia Di Lammermoor with the Scottish Opera Orchestra in February, 2014. He has performed the following roles in Opera's in Europe and Africa - Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, Prunier in Puccini's La Rondine, Tito and Monostatos in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberfloter and Iro in Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria.


In 2015, he made two performance tours to Asia and North America with Chorakademie Lubeck. 


He recently directed and conducted 'Patience' by Arthur Sullivan for the 2016 graduation ceremony of the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) . Similarly, he had a very wonderful production of L’Elisir D’Amore for MUSON. 



Joseph Oparamanuike will be singing 'Ernesto' in Donizetti’s 'DON PASQUALE' at the MUSON Centre Lagos to launch Nigeria's First Opera Company called 'Comic Opera House', founded by himself, on Saturday 3rd September, 2016. Also, he would be launching his new Opera House in Abuja Nigeria in December 2016, when he takes on the role of 'Tamino' in Mozart’s Die Zauberfloter .

Currently, he is the Opera Director for the MTNF/MUSON Diploma School of Music Lagos Nigeria and he is also one of the International Judges for the 'First Viola Competitions' - Nigeria's First International Choral Music Competition Platform.
