Covenant University, African Private University of the Year, has received another feather of glory with Abiola Samuel Oluwaseyi, a product of the university, emerging the Best Engineering Graduate of the Year in the 2016 COREN (Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria) Assembly competition featuring graduates of engineering programmes from all Nigerian universities.

Abiola, who only in June 2016 graduated from the Civil Engineering Department of Covenant University with a 4.90 CGPA, was declared the best among competitors from private universities at the competition held from August 8-10, 2016. The best result among the competitors from Federal Government-owned universities at the competition was 4.87 CGPA, while the most outstanding result among the State-owned varsities was also 4.87 CGPA, with the owners of both results studying Electrical Engineering. Abiola, however, emerged overall tops by virtue of his result being superior to that of his peers from the public universities.

Abiola, in company with Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. David Olukanni, on Monday, August 22, 2016 presented his Best Engineering Graduate Awards to the management of Covenant University at a brief ceremony held inside the conference room of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero.

The awards included a N100, 000 cash prize, a plaque and a certificate written in Abiola’s name, and a computer specifically presented by organisers of the competition to the Department of Civil Engineering.

Acknowledging the feat achieved by Abiola, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, described it as laudable. “You are the best and indeed, I see a profound sense of humility in you; with that, you’ll go places. This is just the beginning,” he said.

Also in their remarks, the Registrar, Pastor Olamide Olusegun; and Director, Financial Services, Pastor Bayo Oladehinbo, commended Abiola on his effort, while attributing it to the CU core values of Spirituality and Possibility Mentality.

Abiola’s sister, Miss Abiola Oluwasimisola Abigail, a student of Covenant University, who represented their parents on the occasion, thanked God for his brother’s life, adding that the prize won was not only for CU but their dad and mum. And Abiola, in his response, expressed gratitude to God and the CU Chancellor, Dr. David O. Oyedepo and the institution’s management for giving him the opportunity to attend the university. He dedicated the awards to the lecturers and colleagues in his department including his family.

A visibly elated Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Dr. David Olukanni, described Abiola’s achievement as an honour to the university and his department, adding that it would serve as an encouragement to all the students of Covenant University.
