China Supports Nigeria’s Bid For A United Nations Permanent Seat



 “We support the legitimate demands of Nigeria for a permanent seat on the UN security council, together with the reform of the UN” -China

Nigeria and other developing countries for some time now have been canvassing for the expansion of the UN Security Council.

Presently, United Kingdom, China, France, Russia and the United States are the only permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The People’s Republic of China has come out to declare it's full support for Nigeria`s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
 

According to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, the Chinese endorsed Nigeria`s desire to occupy a permanent seat on the UN security council during a meeting between him and the Chinese officials at the 4th United Nations Conference for Parliamentary Heads in New York.  

Hon. Yakubu Dogara met with the Speaker of the People's Parliament of China, Mr. Zhang Dejiang and he implored China to use her position as a permanent member of the UN security council to support Nigeria`s desire for a permanent seat towards a better democratization of the council.

“We appreciate China for its effort to democratize the institution of the United Nations and appeal that you support our bid to occupy a permanent seat on the Security Council,” Dogara said.

Responding, Dejiang emphasized that there must be a better representation of developing countries in the United Nations and that Nigeria being an influential country in the world deserved a seat on the council.

“We support the legitimate demands of Nigeria for a permanent seat on the UN security council, together with the reform of the UN,”.
 
Also at the meeting an approval was given by both countries for the establishment of a parliamentary partnership between Nigeria`s National Assembly and the Parliament of the People`s Republic of China. 

Nigeria Speaker further appealed to China to review it's five percent tax on Nigeria's agricultural exports which the Speaker of the People''s Republic of China, Mr Dejiang responded with an assurance that he would communicate the request to the appropriate authorities in China .  
In addition, the Chinese delegation promised to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.
 

The meeting which was held at the instance of the Chinese delegates, came to an end with a promise by Dejiang to also attract Chinese investors to Nigeria.
