A remarkable academic triumph has placed Ekiti State firmly on the continental stage after Adeolu Oluwadamilola Ooreofe, a 14-year-old student, emerged winner of the 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Category in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Her victory did not come suddenly as it is the culmination of years of disciplined preparation and steady progress through increasingly competitive arenas. Before lifting Africa’s top junior spelling title, Ooreofe had already built an impressive reputation within Nigeria’s spelling circuit. She finished second at the 2023 MTN Spelling Bee, placed second again at the 2024 Ekiti State Spelling Bee, secured fifth position at the 2025 African Spelling Bee, and went on to claim second place at the 2025 Nigeria Spelling Bee. That trajectory of excellence set the stage for her historic moment.
The young scholar, a student of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College in Ado Ekiti, began her latest journey by displaying a superior performance in the Ekiti State qualifiers. From there, she advanced to the national competition in Port Harcourt, where she secured second place, earning her spot among Africa’s brightest young spellers.
In Harare, she faced formidable competition from participants representing more than 20 African countries, yet with calm confidence, razor-sharp concentration and impressive command of language, Ooreofe steadily advanced through the rounds until she emerged the continent’s Junior African Spelling Bee Champion.
Her victory comes with tangible rewards as she received a $5,000 educational scholarship and will now go on to represent Africa at the World Spelling Bee in China later this year.
For Ekiti State, the achievement is more than a personal milestone; it is a moment of collective pride. The triumph reflects the nurturing support of her family, the dedication of teachers who guided her academic journey, and the broader environment that encourages educational excellence.
It also underscores the Ekiti State Government’s commitment to strengthening education, demonstrating how investment in learning continues to produce young Nigerians capable of shining on the global stage.
At just fourteen, Adeolu Oluwadamilola Ooreofe has already written her name into Africa’s academic history, a brilliant reminder that Nigeria’s future is being shaped by determined young minds ready to compete with the very best anywhere in the world.
