CROSS RIVER SET TO LAUNCH NIGERIA’S FIRST MONORAIL

Cross River will have the first working monorail in Nigeria, providing access across the artificial lake linking the Calabar International Convention Centre (CICC) with the Tinapa Leisure and Business Resort.

The monorail will be launched alongside the opening of the CICC in September 2015. The CICC is Nigeria’s first purpose-built convention centre and already has bookings for international conferences, with hundreds of delegates expected.

The monorail, when completed, will allow delegates lodging at the Tinapa Lakeside Hotel a speedy crossing to the CICC within 5 minutes, as supposed to 20-30 minutes by road. Similarly, it will allow golfers and residents at Summit Hills, the development surrounding the CICC, to conveniently cross over to Tinapa for shopping.

The monorail will give visitors an amazing scenic view of the vegetation surrounding the two attractions and the Calabar River, as they travel across the lake.

On a recent inspection of the newly-arrived train, Governor Liyel Imoke expressed his satisfaction. "This is a realization of a dream and an indication of growth and economic expansion particularly in the area of tourism which the state is known for. This is growth for business and leisure which should be appreciated by the people.”

The monorail will join the list of Cross River’s firsts, some of which include: the cable car at Obudu, the canopy walkway at Buanchor, the CICC and of course, 'Africa’s biggest street party', Carnival Calabar.
